How many browser tabs have you got open right now? Be truthful. Are you going to check out all of the websites today or do you want to keep the tabs open before you find some time to review them, maybe later in the week?
Each morning I open my RSS reader (NewsFire inside my case) and also the feeds come pouring in. Great! Fresh content! I start hitting my space bar and scanning the headlines. But there is a voice inside my head warning me, “if you’re likely to read each one of these articles, it will require you greater than an hour or so, are you willing to spend so much time this morning just reading how many other folks have to state? Don’t you need to begin working?”. It’s good to possess this built in warning system, however what am I going to do, because I already begun hitting that space bar and reading news reports?
My RSS reading routine goes like this: I press the space bar to jump from one new item to another one. I browse the headlines fast, and once it attracts me I scan all of those other article. If it’s very short or quite interesting I might read it immediately, but this usually doesn’t happen. When I want it and wish to read it later I hit the return factor to open the post inside my browser tab. There is absolutely no need to wait, I can continue scanning the articles even though it loads inside the background.
After I finished this procedure I go to my browser and what exactly do I see? Exactly, one page having a crazy quantity of open tabs. Can One go do other work now and leave my browser similar to this without getting bothered by those tabs? I don’t think so! The next thing is dealing with the opened tabs and saving the articles I wish to read later. Personally I really like to use DEVONthink, my personal database application. I actually have a script setup using a link in my browser that whenever clicked sends an online archive from the current website right to my database. All submissions are put in a single folder. Then, after looking at a tale I will manually place it in a folder within the right category. One of the beautiful things of DEVONthink is its artificial intelligence: should there be a folder with already a few articles with similar contents you can use the ‘Auto-Classify’ functionality to automatically place the files in the right folders. All articles is going to be saved and (Spotlight-) searchable for later reference.
